OnePlus follows its rhythm of biannual releases. This year, the manufacturer releases its smartphones in pairs. After the excellent 7 and 7 Pro, he announced the 7T and 7T Pro. We tested the first in preview. Discover our impressions.
OnePlus is gradually gaining a place of renown in the smartphone market. If it does not have the aura of a Samsung, Apple or Huawei, the manufacturer comes to play the spoilsports and manages to retain its audience. His young and dynamic image is not for nothing, but this is not the heart of the OnePlus strategy. Akis Evangelidis, Vice President of OnePlus France, reminds anyone who wants to hear it: “everything starts with a good product”.
By the end of 2019, the manufacturer is launching two new models: the OnePlus 7T and the OnePlus 7T Pro. The first succeeds a OnePlus 7 passed almost unnoticed , eclipsed by the more innovative Pro version. Never mind, the 7T marks a real improvement over his big brother. We had the chance to use it for several days in preview. Discover our complete test.
Price and release date of OnePlus 7T
At the time of writing, OnePlus has not yet announced the price of 7T in France. The manufacturer will provide this information at the European launch scheduled for early October. Meanwhile, the rates in dollars leave us optimistic: the increase is minimal, so we can expect a price not exceeding the 600 euros in France.
The release date also remains unknown for the moment, but we can bet on a marketing in October. The colors (Frosted Silver and Glacier Blue) are therefore for the moment the only known elements.

Original and elegant design
From the front, it is difficult to distinguish the OnePlus 7T from the OnePlus 7. However, it is slightly smaller (74.44 mm against 74.8 mm) and a little thinner (8.13 mm against 8.2 mm). In contrast, the new kid took a little weight (190 g against 182 g).
This is probably due to the integration of a huge circular photo module on the back of the smartphone. Already adopted by some manufacturers (Motorola, Huawei), this bet remains risky: if we like it a lot, everyone does not share our opinion. Especially since the module ostensibly protrudes from the back surface. We advise the adoption of a protective shell to adjust this point.
Like Apple, OnePlus opts for a frosted glass back surrounded by a shiny frame. These choices are particularly relevant: with its dress both original and elegant, our model Glacier Blue seduced us from the first seconds.
OnePlus positions its physical buttons where we usually find them: volume keys on the left, “alert slider” on the right, above the power button. The brand confirms the abandonment of the 3.5 mm jack and is content to position a speaker and USB-C on the bottom edge.
At the front, it keeps a 20: 9 “flat” screen that allergic to curved screens will appreciate. The drop-shaped notch is there, but OnePlus has reduced its size by 31.46%. He took the opportunity to extend the second speaker that runs along the top edge of the screen.
The OnePlus 7T is a rather big smartphone even if it gains in finesse compared to its predecessors. The grip is excellent: we can finally reach the two borders of the smartphone with one hand. The difference in weight is not felt, we would rather tend to be reassured by the robustness of the product. Moreover the screen is covered with a protection Gorilla Glass 6. Note finally that despite the absence of IP certification, this 7T is resistant to water and dust.
90 Hz screen
OnePlus’s communication left no doubt: the OnePlus 7T inherits the Fluid AMOLED screen of the 7 Pro with however a diagonal of 6.55 inches and a Full HD + definition . The peculiarity of this slab: its refresh rate of 90 Hz which promises more fluidity in the animations and the scrolling of the displayed elements. The benefits of this technology are well established: the screen of the 7 Pro has been voted the best on the market by Display Mate , reference in the field.
OnePlus says they have used the latest AMOLED display technology. It promises better contrast, a wider spectrum of colors with support for sRGB and Display P3. Add to that the HDR10 +, a brightness up to 1000 nits (27% brighter in full sun) and a reduction of blue lights by 40%. What to take full mirettes.
This is what we felt using the OnePlus 7T for a few days. If the manufacturer offers several display profiles (natural, vivid, advanced), we opted for the natural mode, more balanced. Nevertheless, we recommend the Display P3 profile when viewing movies or series. Combined with the HDR10 +, he promises good sessions on Netflix.
The constructor improves its playback mode and adds a color mode to the monochrome. It adjusts colors, brightness and saturation to make reading content more enjoyable. Finally, it incorporates the vibration technology “Haptic” and the fingerprint reader under the screen, more efficient than the previous models.
Once again, OnePlus achieves a faultless by integrating one of the best screens on the market.
Performance and interface
With the Snapdragon 855+ (last processor Qualcomm) and 8 GB of RAM, the OnePlus 7T is among the most powerful models on the market , alongside the ROG Phone 2 and the iPhone 11 Pro. The benchmarks speak for themselves.
On a daily basis, this configuration allows the OnePlus 7T to offer a fluid experience with fast transitions and animations. The smartphone demonstrates its full potential in the game: the most demanding licenses run with the highest graphical configuration. On PUBG Mobile, Shadowgun Legends, Asphalt 9 or NBA Live, we did not notice any slowdown or lag.
Note that Fnatic Mode (the OnePlus gaming mode) is still part of the adventure. It can boost performance during game sessions and optimize certain parameters (block notifications for example). In summary, OnePlus remains true to its reputation.
Oxygen OS adopte Android 10
The OnePlus 7T is the first smartphone delivered directly with Android 10. The manufacturer remains true to his philosophy and is content to bring some personal touches to the pure version of the Google OS. If the brand mentions more than 370 novelties, they focus mainly on animations and transitions, security or optimization of energy.
In fact, regular Oxygen OS or Android Stock should not be disoriented. Light, fluid, fast, the software developed by OnePlus is among our little favorites. The small modifications made to the graphic charter make the experience even more pleasant.
OnePlus takes the opportunity to slightly modify his navigation gestures . Now you press the “return” key by sliding your finger from a side edge to the middle of the screen. More intuitive, this gesture also allows users not to get lost. Previously, OnePlus was the only one to offer a return by sliding your finger up from the left or right side of the bottom border. Among the other novelties, note the slight redesign of the Gallery application.
For the rest we find the classics, but effective Fast gestures (draw an S on the screen off to launch Spotify for example) and Zen Mode . The latter encourages the user to disconnect regularly for 20 to 60 minutes, either to concentrate or for a simple detox session.
Excellent autonomy, ultra-fast charging
The OnePlus 7T incorporates a battery of 3800 mAh is 100 mAh more than his big brother. This slight increase in capacity does not really affect the autonomy of the smartphone. The 7T holds a day and a half to two days according to the uses. If our test model has been slightly slower than its predecessor (one or two hours less), we insist that it does not include the latest version of Oxygen OS.
Already recognized for its talent in the field, OnePlus further improves its charging system. For this, it inaugurates Warp Charge 30T , a charging technology 18% faster than Warp Charge 30. The manufacturer promises 70% more battery in just 30 minutes . These figures may seem surreal, they are accurate. During our test, the charger supplied in the box allowed us to gain 65 to 72% of energy in half an hour. Count less than one hour for a full recharge (starting from 3%). It takes just 60 minutes for a charge of 0 to 100%. Impressive.
Faster, Warp Charge 30T is also smarter. It reloads the OnePlus 7T steadily to maintain low temperatures when playing while charging. Only downside: the lack of wireless charging , yet become a standard in 2019, even on more affordable smartphones. Pity.
Audio: getting better
Like the OnePlus 7, the 7T incorporates two speakers , one on the bottom edge, the other along the ridge above the screen. The latter has been expanded to deliver a more powerful stereo sound. The manufacturer also offers Dolby Atmos compatibility for more immersion. These two assets show their potential in video or game. For listening to music, the 7T is very good without reaching the level of a Galaxy Note 10 for example, the fault of a slight distortion of highs and low too discreet .
The audio experience takes another dimension when you connect a headset USB-C, OnePlus has also abandoned the 3.5 mm jack. Rest assured, the manufacturer provides a Jack / USB-C adapter in the box.
With Bluetooth 5.0 compatibility, aptX, aptX HD, LDAC and AAC support, as well as the introduction of a noise reduction system, the OnePlus should appeal to wireless technology enthusiasts. In any case, we enjoyed the experience: the OnePlus 7T delivers a rounder sound than its big brother, to the delight of our ears.
Camera: the good surprise
OnePlus does not relax its efforts in the field of photography. Once very average, its smartphones improve with each new iteration. To go tickle the market references, the brand gives its 7T a triple sensor:
- Wide angle: 26 mm f / 1.6; Sony IMX586 48 MP 1/2 “sensor (photosites 0.8 μm in 48 MP / 1.6 μm in 12 MP); optical stabilization
- 2x telephoto: 51mm f / 2.2; 12 MP sensor (photosites 1 μm)
- Ultra Wide Angle (117 °): 17mm f / 2.2; 16 MP sensor
OnePlus enhances UltraShot Engine , its image processing system and promises better management of difficult conditions (backstage, low light) as well as portraits.
Without achieving the photo quality of a Galaxy Note 10+, a Google Pixel 3, a Huawei P30 Pro or an iPhone 11 Pro, the OnePlus 7T is very good. In good conditions, there is a better sharpness and colors more faithful to reality. Above all, the manufacturer seems to have found the right level of contrasts.
Photos displayed in groups of three appear in this order: wide-angle, x2-zoom, ultra wide-angle.
OnePlus corrects a recurring defect on its previous models: the contraries. The 7T is much better than its predecessors on this point. On the other hand, in low light, the 7T always suffers from the same defect as its big-brothers: the pictures are tinged with yellow and the noise is sometimes a little too present. The night mode, it is more effective than the OnePlus 7, but it is difficult to exploit the clichés obtained.
Thanks to its triple sensor, the OnePlus 7T can play with distances. The x2 zoom and the ultra-wide angle are very effective. OnePlus manages to keep a good dive, realistic colors and excellent contrasts. While many models tend to darken the shot in ultra-wide angle, the 7T maintains a good exposure. Of course, in low light, the quality deteriorates.
The portraits are like the rest of the camera: very good without reaching the quality of a reference model. If the contours are precise, the bokeh sometimes lacks naturalness.
Like the Honor 20 Pro, the OnePlus 7T incorporates a macro mode for photographs very closely. While Honor’s model could get closer to 4 cm, the 7T can photograph a subject at 2.5 cm. Although dedicated to specific uses (photos of flowers, insects, etc.), this macro mode is successful with detailed photos and just colors.
At the front, OnePlus opts for a 25mm f / 2 wide-angle lens with a 16 MP 1 / 3.1 “sensor (1 μm photosites). This configuration allows the 7T to make excellent selfies. Special mention in portrait mode, very successful.
Finally, the OnePlus 7T improves in video with notably a better stabilization. Again, an iPhone 11 Pro or a Galaxy Note 10+ are more powerful, but the 7T does not demerit.
With the 7T, OnePlus thus manages to improve in photo. If it does not reach the level of the best in the market, it does not demerit. The difference in quality will only jump in the eyes of experts. With regard to its price, the OnePlus 7T achieves real feats.
